News dal Gruppo di Lettura e Book Club!

Protagonisti assoluti dell'incontro sono stati i nostri studenti e le studentesse che hanno condotto interamente l’intervista, gestendo il dialogo con grande maturità e competenza. Grazie a domande attente e approfondite, durante l'incontro sono stati trattati temi complessi: dai segreti del mestiere della traduzione, alla politica internazionale, passando per la storia contemporanea e l’impatto dell’Intelligenza Artificiale nel mondo della cultura e della traduzione. Particolarmente significativo è stato il racconto dell'esperienza personale di Hicks, con un focus sugli anni trascorsi a Sarajevo.

Jim Hicks era collegato dagli Stati Uniti assieme alla moglie, prof.ssa Anna Botta, anch'essa traduttrice e docente: durante la conversazione, è emerso con chiarezza come la traduzione del romanzo non sia stato un atto solitario ma un vero lavoro di squadra, nato dal confronto costante tra il traduttore, la moglie e l’autrice stessa.

L'ottima riuscita dell'incontro è stata confermata dalla mail di ringraziamento inviata successivamente da Jim Hicks, e dalle riflessioni  degli studenti e delle studentesse, delle quali pubblichiamo qui alcuni estratti.

The online meeting with Jim and Anna Hicks was a wonderful experience that helped me realise the importance of translating. As Mr. Hicks said, even if it can be perceived as a betrayal to the original spirit of the novel, translating is essential to reach people from different countries. It's discovery and understanding. I think that especially these days it can send a message of peace and remind us of our humanity, despite our origins or the language we speak. - Maristella (3CL)

I really enjoyed taking part in the presentation, the interview, and in the work “behind the scenes” where we brainstormed and came up with suitable questions for Jim and his wife Anna. I reckon this experience made me understand what interviewing really means, but above all it made me aware of the incredible amount of work required to publish books.  To be honest, before our meeting, I had never really given it much thought.  - Sofia (4CL)
